What are the factors that can influence skin ageing?

Factors that trigger or accelerate ageing of the skin include excessive exposure to sun, loss of subcutaneous fat, unhealthy life style choices (such as smoking), pollution, stress, gravity and obesity.

What are the skin changes that come with age?

These include:

• Thinning of the outer layer of the skin(epidermis) making skin more transparent.
• Skin becomes fragile due to flattening of the area where the epidermis and dermis (layer of skin under the skin)
• Increased bruising due to thinning of blood vessel walls.
• Skin can become rougher.
• Loss of elasticity due to the loss of elastin. This causes the skin to lose firmness.
• Bone changes, muscle atrophy and the loss of fat under the skin leading to deepening of nasolabial folds, midface ptosis and loss of jaw contour and formation of jowls.

How do you prevent/delay skin ageing?
